Truist Financial Corporation
ACTIVE 9+ SIGNALOne assessment, ten perspectives.
The final score is weighted; it is not the average of the axes.
Risk: 10 means lower relative risk and greater resilience. Scores are methodological opinions as of the stated date.
Truist Financial is one of the ten largest commercial banks in the US, headquartered in Charlotte. Formed through the merger of BB&T and SunTrust, it operates in retail and small-business banking, commercial and corporate banking, investment banking, wealth management, payments and specialist lending, with a strong presence in the faster-growing states of the southeastern US.
Truist qualified as 9+ through a balanced combination of factors. It remained a highly profitable and well-capitalised bank, with rising revenue, a strong recovery and a valuation near 10–11 times earnings. Second-quarter net income available to common shareholders was approximately US$1.5 billion, reached US$1.23 — up 37% year on year — revenue approached US$5.3 billion and was 10.9%. Truist also continued returning capital through dividends and .
The convergence of those fundamentals, reasonable valuation, a still-healthy long-term chart and a personal purchase exceeding US$1 million by the new CEO just 16 days after taking office passed the filter. The margin was narrow: there was no buying cluster, other insiders had sold and expected growth had weakened. Close to Lyons's own purchase price, the balance of quality, price and risk nevertheless supported 9.0.

Michael P. Lyons — President & CEO
Transaction date: 17 September 2026. Shares: 21,000. Average price: US$48.3608. Actual execution range: US$48.33–48.375. Amount: approximately US$1.016 million. Transaction: direct open-market purchase, Form 4 code P.
The Form 4 was filed with the SEC on 18 September. After the transaction, Lyons directly held the 21,000 purchased shares. Compensation-related RSUs appear separately in the filing and are not included in this voluntary purchase.
Why it matters
Lyons became CEO on 1 September 2026, only 16 days before the purchase. More than US$1 million is a material amount rather than merely symbolic. However, this was a single executive buying, rather than a cluster, explaining an Insider Signal score of 9.5 rather than a figure nearer 10.
The opportunity emerged after the share corrected from US$51–52 towards US$48–49. The CEO bought at US$48.36 and the last available closing price before the assessment was US$49.00, in almost the same area.
This avoided a situation in which an insider purchase is discovered only after the share has already rallied 15% or 20%. Here, there had been no rally following the purchase.
The strategic context also mattered. Two days before Lyons bought, Truist announced the sale of approximately US$5.5 billion of near-prime auto loans, as part of simplifying the bank and exiting less attractive activities.
Truist is one of the largest US commercial banks. Its activities include:
- retail banking;
- small-business banking;
- commercial and corporate banking;
- investment banking and capital markets;
- wealth management;
- payments;
- specialist lending.
Assets were approximately US$556 billion at the end of June 2026.
Q2 2026: net income available to common shareholders approximately US$1.5 billion; diluted US$1.23, up 37% year on year; revenue approximately US$5.27 billion, or US$5.31 billion on a tax-equivalent basis; revenue growth 5.5%; 10.9%.
The bank returned approximately US$1.8 billion through dividends and share repurchases during the quarter, including approximately US$1.2 billion of .
In plain language, Truist remained profitable, had a comfortable capital buffer and generated enough cash to return capital while working to improve the business.
This was not an explosive-growth thesis. Truist is a large, mature bank whose potential comes mainly from moderate revenue growth, better efficiency, higher profitability and more effective use of capital.
was the weaker point. Expected revenue growth had been reduced to approximately 3.5–4%, and expected net interest income growth to approximately 1–1.5%.
That supported a Growth score of 8.4: positive, but well below the growth strength seen in ONON, 1INN or I.
Trailing : approximately 11x. : approximately 10x. : approximately 1x. : approximately 1.0–1.1.
For readers less familiar with these ratios:
- A of 10x means the share price is approximately ten times forecast annual earnings per share.
- A near 1x means the market values the bank close to the book value of its shareholders' equity.
- A near 1 suggests the price is not excessive relative to expected growth, although both earnings and growth forecasts can change.
The assessment did not describe the share as extraordinarily cheap. It indicated that the market was not demanding a large premium for a profitable, well-capitalised institution. Valuation / : 9.1.
Insider history produced an important deduction. Other insiders had sold approximately US$2.7 million during the previous 12 months covered by the research.
It would therefore be inaccurate to say the whole management team was buying. The observed signal was a new CEO making a material personal purchase, rather than a management-wide cluster.
That distinction supported Insider History: 7.7, helping explain why TFC received 9.0 rather than a higher final assessment.
1. New leadership
Lyons became CEO on 1 September. A leadership change does not guarantee better results, but creates scope for changes in strategy, costs and capital allocation. His purchase of more than US$1 million soon after taking office made subsequent decisions particularly relevant to follow.
2. Simplifying the bank
Exiting approximately US$5.5 billion of near-prime auto loans removes an activity considered less attractive by management. Continued simplification could allow capital to be concentrated in businesses with better returns.
3. Share repurchases
Reducing the share count increases each remaining share's claim on earnings. at a relatively low valuation can create value if the underlying business remains sound.
4. Better efficiency
Revenue growth need not be exceptional if management can control costs and improve profitability.
5. Upcoming results
The supplied assessment identified 16 October 2026 as the expected Q3 results date, one of the first objective tests of the thesis under the new leadership.
1. Weaker
Lower growth expectations showed that the business was not accelerating across all areas. Another cut could quickly weaken the thesis.
2. Interest rates
Bank earnings depend partly on the difference between income earned on loans and interest paid on deposits. Rapid rate changes can pressure net interest margins or demand for credit.
3. Credit quality
An economic deterioration can increase defaults and require larger provisions for losses.
4. Mixed insider history
The new CEO's large purchase was positive, but earlier sales by other insiders meant there was no collective buying signal from management.
5. Strategy execution
Selling less attractive assets is only the first step. Management must then demonstrate that it can redeploy capital at better returns.
Technical Daily: 8.0
At the assessment, TFC was near US$49, slightly below the main observed moving averages of approximately US$51.29, US$49.59 and US$49.87. Daily was near 40. In plain language, recent selling pressure was evident, but the share was not extremely oversold.
Support: US$47.50–48.50
This area roughly coincided with an ascending trend line from the 2024 lows. The CEO's purchase at US$48.36 was close to that zone, making it especially relevant to the assessment.
Resistance
The first area to recover was US$49.50–51.30, followed by US$53–54.
Plain-language reading
The daily chart had not confirmed that the decline was over. It showed a test of an area where the broader uptrend could survive. A clear break below US$47.50–48 would require the technical thesis to be reassessed.
Technical Monthly: 9.0
The structural picture was stronger than the daily chart. Price remained above the principal monthly moving averages considered in the research, near US$42.18, US$44.64 and US$40.87.
Monthly was approximately 54, indicating moderately positive without an overbought reading.
The most relevant feature was the price structure: despite volatility in recent years, the share had resumed a sequence of progressively higher lows. At the assessment date, the recent correction therefore appeared to be a pullback within a still-healthy broader structure.
Monthly reading: higher lows and moderate supported a healthy long-term structure.
TFC narrowly passed the 9+ threshold. The thesis combined a highly profitable business, comfortable capital, a valuation near 10–11 times earnings and the ability to return capital, while new management began simplifying the bank.
The additional signal was Michael Lyons investing more than US$1 million of his own money at US$48.36, only 16 days after becoming CEO, without the subsequent market price moving far from that area. The monthly structure remained healthy and the price was testing a relevant technical zone.
The lack of a cluster, earlier sales by other insiders, weaker and daily-chart weakness limited the assessment. Nevertheless, the combination of Insider, Timing, Fundamentals, Valuation, Balance Sheet and Monthly supported a final score of 9.0/10 — 9+ SIGNAL.
